The Nuba Mountains region has experienced prolonged armed conflict, displacement, social fragmentation, and cycles of violence that have deeply affected communities. Many young people have grown up witnessing instability, loss, mistrust, and inter-community tensions. Exposure to violence and political divisions has left emotional scars and weakened traditional mechanisms of dialogue and conflict resolution.
As a result, youth in the region often face:
•Limited skills in peaceful dialogue and mediation
•Deep-rooted mistrust among different communities
•Exposure to narratives of division and retaliation
•Normalization of violence as a conflict-resolution tool
•Reduced opportunities to participate in peacebuilding initiatives
Without structured peace education and reconciliation platforms, young people may unintentionally perpetuate conflict patterns. The absence of organized dialogue facilitation training and anti-violence awareness programs increases the risk of recurring tensions and undermines long-term stability. Youth—who represent the largest and most energetic segment of the population—are at risk of either becoming agents of division or missing the opportunity to become champions of peace.
If not addressed, the lack of youth-centered reconciliation efforts may slow post-conflict recovery and weaken efforts toward sustainable peace in the Nuba Mountains.
