Building Self-Reliance, Prosperity, and Sustainable Livelihoods for the Nuba People

Overview

Economic empowerment is the key to breaking cycles of poverty, dependency, and marginalization.

The Nuba Mountains International Association  recognizes that decades of war, displacement, and underdevelopment have deprived many Nuba families of economic opportunities and access to productive resources.

Through its Economic Development & Investment Committee, NMIA seeks to restore livelihoods, strengthen local economies, and promote entrepreneurship among the Nuba people both in the homeland (Nuba Mountains region) and the diaspora.

This initiative promotes the vision:

“From Dependency to Dignity — Empowering Nuba Communities Through Work, Enterprise, and Innovation.”

Purpose

The Economic Empowerment Program aims to:

  • Enhance access to employment, finance, and entrepreneurship opportunities.
  • Support small business development and cooperative enterprises.
  • Strengthen local production, trade, and investment systems.
  • Build financial literacy and resource management capacity.
  • Foster sustainable livelihoods that promote resilience and self-reliance.

Possible Services and Interventions

Below are the key services NMIA can offer under the Economic Empowerment framework:

A. Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development

  • Provide training workshops in business planning, marketing, and financial management.
  • Offer startup grants or revolving micro-loans for youth, women, and returnees launching small enterprises.
  • Establish Entrepreneurship Resource Centers offering mentoring, business coaching, and networking opportunities.
  • Facilitate access to markets and trade fairs for Nuba products (agriculture, crafts, foods, etc.).

Goal: Create jobs and empower individuals to become self-employed entrepreneurs and community investors

B. Vocational and Livelihood Training Programs

  • Establish vocational training centers in key skills such as carpentry, tailoring, construction, auto repair, ICT, and agriculture.
  • Integrate entrepreneurship modules into vocational programs to promote self-employment.
  • Support apprenticeship programs linking trainees with local artisans and professionals.
  • Offer certifications and practical tools for graduates to start their own businesses.

Goal: Build a skilled, productive, and self-sustaining workforce among the Nuba population.

C. Cooperative and Community Enterprise Development

  • Support the formation of cooperatives for farmers, artisans, traders, and women’s groups.
  • Train cooperative members in governance, management, and value chain development.
  • Facilitate cooperative access to credit, equipment, and bulk purchasing systems.
  • Encourage collective savings and reinvestment within community enterprises.

D. Microfinance and Savings Initiatives

  • Create a Community Microfinance Fund to provide small loans and grants to low-income families.
  • Establish Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to strengthen financial inclusion.
  • Train community members in savings culture, bookkeeping, and micro-business management.
  • Partner with diaspora investors and credit institutions to fund sustainable microprojects.

Goal: Expand access to capital and financial services for poor and underserved communities.

E. Agriculture and Food Security Support

  • Provide farm tools, seeds, and training to improve agricultural productivity.
  • Promote climate-smart farming techniques and sustainable land use.
  • Support livestock production, beekeeping, and poultry projects as income sources.
  • Facilitate access to irrigation systems and local markets for smallholder farmers.
  • Introduce agro-processing and storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses.

Goal: Strengthen food security and rural livelihoods through sustainable agriculture.

F. Youth and Women Economic Empowerment

  • Develop special economic programs targeting unemployed youth and women heads of households.
  • Support female entrepreneurs through mentorship, capital access, and market linkage.
  • Organize business competitions and innovation awards to promote creativity and inclusion.
  • Provide training in digital and financial literacy for women and youth.

Goal: Create inclusive opportunities that uplift women and youth as economic leaders.

G. Diaspora Investment and Remittance Mobilization

  • Encourage Nuba diaspora professionals and business owners to invest in local projects.
  • Establish a Nuba Diaspora Investment Fund to support infrastructure and enterprise development.
  • Develop systems for safe and transparent remittance management for families and community initiatives.
  • Facilitate joint ventures between diaspora investors and local entrepreneurs.

Goal: Channel diaspora resources into productive investments that rebuild the Nuba economy.

H. Employment and Income-Generating Projects

  • Partner with NGOs, private sector, and public institutions to create job placement programs.
  • Support community works programs such as road repair, housing, and public sanitation projects.
  • Launch cash-for-work and social enterprise initiatives that employ youth and displaced populations.
  • Facilitate career development workshops and job readiness training.

Goal: Provide immediate livelihood support while building long-term employability.

I. Financial Literacy and Business Education

  • Conduct financial literacy campaigns on budgeting, savings, debt management, and investment.
  • Offer training in cooperative accounting and business recordkeeping.
  • Publish educational materials and toolkits on economic empowerment for Nuba communities.
  • Promote family-based financial education programs to improve household resilience.

Goal: Build a financially aware and empowered community capable of managing resources wisely.

J. Infrastructure and Market Development

  • Advocate for and support rural infrastructure projects such as roads, markets, and storage centers.
  • Facilitate community marketplaces that connect producers and consumers.
  • Mobilize partnerships for rural electrification, ICT access, and transport improvements.
  • Promote sustainable tourism and cultural enterprises to generate income for communities.

Goal: Strengthen the economic foundation and connectivity of Nuba regions for long-term growth.

Partnerships and Collaboration

NMIA will collaborate with:

  • Local ministries of trade, labor, and agriculture to align with national economic programs.
  • International partners such as USAID, UNDP, FAO, and World Bank for technical and financial support.
  • Faith-based and civil society organizations for joint implementation of livelihood projects.
  • Private sector partners and diaspora investors to scale local enterprise initiatives.
