In many refugee and diaspora settings, women play a central yet often underrecognized role in sustaining families, maintaining social networks, and preserving cultural continuity. Despite their influence at the household and community levels, women are frequently underrepresented in formal leadership structures and peacebuilding platforms. At the same time, many women have directly experienced the impacts of conflict, displacement, gender-based violence, and economic hardship.

Within refugee camps and diaspora settlements, tensions over resources, leadership representation, aid distribution, and cultural differences can create disputes that affect families and community stability. Women often bear the burden of these conflicts—managing domestic stress, caring for traumatized children, and navigating social pressures—yet they may lack formal mechanisms to contribute to mediation or advocacy processes.

Without structured support, the absence of women’s participation in peacebuilding efforts can result in:

•Limited representation of women’s perspectives in conflict resolution

•Reduced attention to gender-specific protection concerns

•Continued vulnerability to gender-based violence and discrimination

•Weak grassroots peace structures lacking inclusive leadership

•Missed opportunities for community cohesion through women’s networks

If women are not empowered as peace actors and advocates, community peace processes remain incomplete and less sustainable.

Purpose of the Project

The Women-Led Peace Initiatives project aims to strengthen the role of women as active peacebuilders, mediators, and advocates within refugee and diaspora communities. The initiative seeks to establish women peace mediator networks, enhance protection mechanisms, and promote inclusive peace leadership.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Formation of women peace mediator networks

•Training workshops on mediation, dialogue facilitation, and conflict transformation

•Gender-sensitive protection and advocacy training sessions

•Establishment of safe spaces for women-led dialogue

•Awareness campaigns on women’s rights and protection frameworks

•Community-based monitoring of protection concerns

•Mentorship programs linking experienced women leaders with emerging leaders
