Reintegration & Social Cohesion Program

Communities in the Nuba Mountains have experienced repeated waves of displacement due to armed conflict, insecurity, and destruction of villages and livelihoods. Many families were forced to flee to remote areas, neighboring regions, or refugee camps, often remaining displaced for years. As security conditions gradually improve in some areas, displaced families are returning to their ancestral lands and communities.

However, reintegration is not automatic or seamless. Returning families often face destroyed homes, limited infrastructure, land disputes, and disrupted social networks. In some cases, land and property boundaries may have shifted during displacement, leading to tension between returnees and those who remained. Competition over scarce resources such as water, grazing land, and farmland can further intensify misunderstandings.

In addition, prolonged separation may weaken community bonds and traditional social structures. Returnees may struggle with trauma, economic hardship, and feelings of marginalization. Host communities may also experience strain due to limited resources and adjustment pressures. Without structured reintegration support and dialogue mechanisms, these tensions can hinder recovery and undermine fragile peace.

If reintegration challenges are not proactively addressed, displaced families risk social isolation, renewed conflict, and limited access to community services and opportunities.

Purpose of the Project

The Reintegration & Social Cohesion Programs aim to support the peaceful return and reintegration of displaced families while strengthening unity and trust within host communities. The initiative seeks to rebuild social bonds, prevent conflict, and promote inclusive recovery processes in the Nuba Mountains.

•Community reconciliation and trust-building forums

•Conflict mediation support related to land and resource disputes

•Psychosocial support sessions for displaced families

•Community mapping and participatory planning for shared resource use

•Social cohesion workshops involving youth and women

•Establishment of local reintegration support committees

Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact

Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:

•Reduced tensions over land and resource allocation

•Strengthened trust and social bonds within communities

•Improved collaboration between returnees and host populations

•Enhanced inclusion of vulnerable families in community life
