Within the Nuba and broader Sudanese diaspora communities in the United States, generational differences are increasingly shaping identity, communication patterns, leadership expectations, and cultural engagement. Elders carry lived experiences of homeland traditions, conflict, displacement, and cultural values rooted in collective responsibility and ancestral heritage. Youth, however, are growing up in a Western context influenced by different social norms, educational systems, digital culture, and individualistic frameworks.

Over time, these differing worldviews can create misunderstandings, communication gaps, and unspoken tensions. Elders may feel that cultural values are being lost or diluted, while youth may feel misunderstood or pressured by expectations that do not align with their lived reality in the United States. This disconnect can lead to:

•Weak cultural identity among second-generation youth

•Reduced respect and communication between generations

•Leadership transition challenges within community organizations

•Loss of traditional knowledge and oral history

•Fragmented community planning and limited youth engagement

Without intentional platforms for structured dialogue, both generations risk growing further apart—limiting the community’s ability to sustain its heritage while adapting to a new environment.

Purpose of the Project

The Intergenerational Dialogue Program aims to bridge generational gaps by creating safe, respectful, and structured spaces for youth and elders to engage in meaningful conversations. The initiative seeks to preserve cultural identity, strengthen mutual understanding, and support healthy leadership transition within the diaspora community.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Youth–elder dialogue circles facilitated by trained moderators

•Cultural identity discussion sessions

•Storytelling forums highlighting lived experiences of elders

•Leadership transition and mentorship conversations

•Workshops on navigating dual identity (heritage and American context)

•Intergenerational community retreats and reflection gatherings

•Development of cultural preservation documentation projects

•Creation of mentorship pairings between youth and senior leaders
