Refugee and diaspora communities living in host countries often consist of individuals from different tribes, regions, political backgrounds, and social identities. While they share a common experience of displacement, historical divisions and limited interaction between sub-groups can persist. In addition, refugee communities may experience social distance from host communities due to cultural differences, language barriers, and limited structured engagement opportunities.
Without intentional cross-community interaction platforms, relationships between different community groups remain superficial or fragmented. Misunderstandings, stereotypes, and mistrust can develop when groups lack opportunities for positive collaboration. In some cases, competition over limited resources or aid can intensify divisions rather than promote unity.
The absence of structured cultural exchange and joint service initiatives can result in:
Weak inter-group trust and limited cooperation
Reduced cultural understanding and appreciation
Missed opportunities for youth engagement in positive activities
Isolation of refugee communities from host societies
Limited social cohesion across diverse populations
Without proactive cross-community engagement mechanisms, communities risk remaining divided along cultural or social lines—hindering both resilience and long-term integration.
