Women in the Nuba Mountains have historically played essential roles in sustaining families, supporting agriculture, preserving culture, and contributing to community survival during periods of conflict and instability. Despite their resilience and contributions, women remain significantly underrepresented in formal decision-making spaces, including local councils, customary leadership forums, peace committees, and governance structures.
Years of conflict, displacement, and fragile institutions have reshaped governance systems in the region. In many cases, traditional leadership systems remain male-dominated, while modern governance structures are still evolving. Cultural norms, limited access to leadership training, lower literacy levels among rural women, and lack of mentorship opportunities further restrict women’s participation in public leadership roles.
As a result:
•Women’s perspectives are often absent from local governance decisions
•Policies and community development priorities may not fully reflect women’s needs
•Leadership pipelines for young women remain weak or nonexistent
•Governance processes may lack inclusivity and broad community representation
•Girls and young women lack visible leadership role models
Without intentional strategies to promote women’s leadership inclusion, governance systems risk remaining unbalanced and less responsive to the needs of the entire community.
Purpose of the Project
The Women Leadership & Governance Inclusion Initiative aims to strengthen inclusive governance in the Nuba Mountains by encouraging and preparing women to actively participate in local councils and community leadership structures. The initiative seeks to build women’s confidence, leadership capacity, and representation in decision-making processes.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
•Establishment of community-based protection committees with women representation
•Gender rights education workshops covering legal protections and responsibilities
•Awareness campaigns on prevention of gender-based violence
•Training of community protection focal persons
•Dialogue forums integrating customary and formal justice perspectives
•Development of confidential reporting and referral pathways
•Collaboration with local leaders and legal aid actors
•Production of culturally appropriate rights education materials
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Increased awareness of women’s legal rights and protection mechanisms
•Strengthened community protection structures
•Improved reporting and response systems for protection cases
•Reduced stigma around gender rights and protection issues
•Greater inclusion of women in local justice and governance discussions
