In many diaspora and refugee-hosting countries, displaced individuals face prolonged unemployment and limited income opportunities due to lack of access to productive assets. While many beneficiaries possess practical skills in tailoring, mechanics, agriculture, and other trades, they often lack the essential tools and equipment required to apply these skills in income-generating activities.
As a result, even trained individuals remain economically inactive or dependent on informal, low-wage labor. Tailors without sewing machines cannot start home-based businesses; mechanics without proper toolkits cannot offer repair services; and small-scale farmers without basic agricultural starter kits struggle to cultivate crops effectively. This gap between skill acquisition and access to productive tools prevents beneficiaries from transitioning toward self-reliance.
Women and youth are particularly affected, as they frequently have limited financial resources to purchase equipment independently. Without starter tools, many families remain dependent on humanitarian assistance and unable to build sustainable livelihoods. The absence of asset-based livelihood support perpetuates poverty, reduces household income stability, and limits community-wide economic recovery.
Purpose of the Project
The Livelihood Starter Kits project aims to bridge the gap between skills and income generation by providing essential tools and equipment to vulnerable individuals in diaspora communities. The project seeks to empower beneficiaries to immediately apply their skills in tailoring, mechanics, agriculture, and related trades to generate sustainable income.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
•Identification and selection of eligible beneficiaries
•Skills verification and needs assessment
•Procurement and distribution of livelihood starter kits (e.g., sewing machines, mechanic toolkits, agricultural starter kits)
•Basic business and financial literacy training
•Orientation on equipment maintenance and safety
•Formation of peer support or cooperative groups
•Ongoing mentoring and performance monitoring
•Income tracking and impact assessment
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Immediate ability to generate income using provided tools
•Increased household income and financial stability
•Reduced dependency on humanitarian aid
•Enhanced dignity and self-reliance
•Greater economic participation of women and youth
•Strengthened local service availability within communities
•Improved food production capacity (for agricultural kits)
•Long-term livelihood sustainability
Ultimately, the Livelihood Starter Kits project transforms practical skills into tangible economic opportunity, empowering displaced individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.
