Rural communities in the Nuba Mountains rely heavily on agriculture as their primary source of livelihood. Farmers produce grains, oil seeds, honey, mangoes, pineapples, and other crops; however, most of these products are sold in raw form with minimal value addition. Years of conflict, limited infrastructure, lack of agro-processing facilities, and weak market systems have prevented rural producers from transforming their agricultural output into higher-value products.


As a result, farmers often sell crops immediately after harvest at low prices due to lack of storage, processing capacity, and organized market access. Significant post-harvest losses occur because of inadequate preservation systems. Without grain milling businesses, oil processing units, honey packaging systems, or fruit processing factories, the economic potential of rural production remains underutilized. Mangoes and pineapples frequently spoil during peak seasons, while oil seeds and grains are transported long distances for processing—reducing local income opportunities.


This situation limits rural income growth, perpetuates poverty, and reduces employment opportunities for youth and women. The absence of local agro-enterprises also weakens food security and economic circulation within the region. Without rural enterprise development, agricultural productivity alone cannot translate into sustainable economic advancement.


Purpose of the Project


The Rural Enterprise Development project aims to strengthen rural economies by establishing and supporting grain milling businesses, oil processing units, honey production enterprises, and mango and pineapple juice processing factories. The initiative seeks to promote value addition, increase income, reduce post-harvest losses, and stimulate local economic growth.

The project will implement the following activities:

  • Market and value chain assessments
  • Establishment of grain milling and oil processing facilities
  • Development of honey production and packaging units
  • Construction and equipping of mango and pineapple juice processing factories
  • Training in agro-processing techniques and quality control
