Members of the Nuba diaspora in the United States face increasing challenges in preserving and accessing their collective historical memory. Years of displacement, conflict, and migration have scattered important historical documents, photographs, oral histories, traditional songs, and community records. Much of this valuable cultural heritage remains undocumented, stored informally in private collections, or at risk of permanent loss.

Beneficiaries frequently experience:

•Limited access to reliable documentation of Nuba history and heritage

•Loss of historical photographs, oral traditions, and cultural records

•Weak transmission of cultural knowledge to younger generations

•Fragmented community memory due to geographic dispersion

•Limited visibility of Nuba contributions within broader academic and public spaces

As elders age and firsthand witnesses to historical events pass away, invaluable oral testimonies risk disappearing. Youth often rely on secondary or incomplete information about their cultural identity. Without a centralized and organized digital archive, the diaspora community lacks a sustainable platform to preserve, safeguard, and share its heritage.

The absence of a structured digital preservation system threatens long-term cultural continuity and historical integrity.

Purpose of the Project

The Digital Cultural Archive Project aims to create a comprehensive, website-based digital platform dedicated to preserving and documenting Nuba history, culture, and heritage through photographs, videos, audio recordings, and written materials.

The project seeks to safeguard cultural memory while making it accessible to current and future generations within the United States and globally.

Key Project Activities

To achieve its objectives, the project will implement the following activities:

•Development of a secure and user-friendly digital archive website

•Collection and digitization of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts

•Recording and archiving oral histories from elders and community leaders

•Preservation of traditional music, storytelling, and audio recordings
