Maternal Health & Nutrition Program

Women in the Nuba Mountains continue to face serious challenges in accessing quality maternal healthcare and adequate nutrition, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas. Years of instability, weak health infrastructure, long distances to health facilities, shortages of skilled birth attendants, and limited health education have contributed to preventable maternal and newborn health risks.

Many pregnant women lack access to regular antenatal care, nutritional counseling, and safe delivery services. Poor road infrastructure and insecurity often make it difficult for women to reach clinics in time during labor. In addition, food insecurity and poverty contribute to maternal malnutrition, anemia, and low birth weight among infants. Limited awareness of safe motherhood practices, breastfeeding, and newborn care further increases health vulnerabilities.

In some communities, cultural practices and limited access to accurate health information may discourage timely medical care. Without structured outreach and awareness programs, many mothers remain unaware of danger signs during pregnancy or the importance of skilled birth attendance.

As a result:

•Maternal and newborn complications may go untreated

•Preventable maternal and infant mortality risks remain high

•Malnutrition among pregnant and lactating mothers persists

•Low birth weight and childhood health challenges increase

•Families experience long-term health and economic consequences

Without targeted maternal health and nutrition interventions, vulnerable women and newborns will continue to face preventable health risks that undermine family and community well-being.
