Women in rural areas of the Nuba Mountains play a central role in agriculture, food production, and household survival. They are often responsible for planting, harvesting, processing crops, collecting water and firewood, and caring for children and elderly family members. Despite their critical contributions to food security and rural livelihoods, women farmers frequently lack access to agricultural training, improved seeds, modern farming tools, and organized cooperative structures.
Years of conflict, displacement, limited infrastructure, and economic instability have disrupted traditional farming systems and weakened rural markets. Many women cultivate small plots of land using outdated farming techniques and insufficient tools, resulting in low productivity and limited surplus for income generation. Climate variability, soil degradation, and limited irrigation further reduce crop yields. Without access to improved seeds or technical knowledge, women struggle to increase production or adapt to environmental challenges.
In addition, women often face barriers to land ownership, market access, and financial services. Without organized cooperative structures, individual women farmers have limited bargaining power in local markets and limited access to shared storage or marketing systems.
As a result:
•Agricultural productivity remains low
•Household food insecurity persists
•Women’s income-generating capacity is limited
•Families remain vulnerable to climate shocks and economic instability
•Rural poverty cycles continue across generations
Without targeted intervention to strengthen women’s agricultural capacity and economic participation, rural households in the Nuba Mountains will continue to face food insecurity and limited economic resilience.
Purpose of the Project
The Rural Women Economic Empowerment Program aims to strengthen the economic resilience of women farmers in the Nuba Mountains by enhancing agricultural skills, improving access to productive resources, and promoting cooperative farming models. The initiative seeks to increase productivity, income generation, and long-term food security for rural families.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
•Agricultural training workshops on climate-smart and improved farming techniques
•Distribution of quality seeds and basic farming tools
•Training in soil management, crop diversification, and sustainable practices
•Formation and strengthening of women-led cooperative farming groups
•Capacity building in cooperative governance and group management
•Market linkage facilitation and collective marketing support
•Basic financial literacy and savings group formation
•Monitoring and mentorship support throughout planting cycles
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Increased agricultural productivity and improved crop yields
•Enhanced access to quality seeds and farming tools
•Strengthened cooperative farming networks
•Improved household food security
•Increased income through surplus crop sales
•Greater economic independence and leadership roles for women
•Improved resilience against climate and economic shocks
Ultimately, the Rural Women Economic Empowerment Program will enable women farmers in the Nuba Mountains to move from subsistence-level survival to sustainable agricultural productivity—strengthening family livelihoods and contributing to broader community development.
“Empowered rural women cultivate not only crops—but stability, dignity, and prosperity for their communities.”
