Women in diaspora settings—especially in refugee camps and host communities—often live within environments shaped by displacement, trauma, economic hardship, and unresolved intercommunal tensions. Many families carry the emotional wounds of past conflict, while daily stressors such as poverty, overcrowding, limited resources, and social fragmentation can intensify disputes at household and community levels.
Although women are frequently the stabilizing force within families and communities, they are often excluded from formal conflict resolution mechanisms and leadership structures. At the same time, many lack access to structured training in conflict transformation, mediation skills, and dialogue facilitation. Without these skills, disputes may escalate into prolonged divisions, domestic conflicts, or broader community tensions.
In displacement contexts, traditional mediation systems may be weakened, and new community structures may not yet be fully established. As a result:
•Interpersonal and inter-family conflicts may remain unresolved
•Community mistrust and divisions may deepen
•Women’s voices may be absent from peacebuilding spaces
•Youth may lack positive conflict resolution role models
•Minor disputes may escalate into larger communal tensions
Without intentional investment in women’s peacebuilding capacities, opportunities for grassroots reconciliation and social cohesion may be missed.
