Refugee communities in host countries often consist of individuals and families who have experienced conflict, displacement, trauma, and social fragmentation. Within camps or urban refugee settlements, people from diverse tribal, regional, political, and social backgrounds are brought together in shared living environments—often under conditions of economic hardship, limited resources, and uncertainty about the future.
In such settings, tensions may arise over access to resources, land use, aid distribution, leadership representation, cultural misunderstandings, or historical grievances carried from the homeland. Without structured and trusted dialogue mechanisms, small disputes can escalate into larger conflicts, undermining social cohesion and community stability.
Many refugee communities lack formal grassroots mediation structures, and local leaders may not have adequate training in dispute resolution or participatory dialogue facilitation. As a result:
•Community disputes may remain unresolved or handled informally without fairness
•Mistrust between groups can deepen
•Women and youth voices may be excluded from decision-making
•Humanitarian program implementation may face resistance or disruption
•Overall social cohesion may weaken
Without proactive platforms for structured dialogue and grassroots peacebuilding, refugee communities remain vulnerable to division and instability—hindering both resilience and development efforts.
