Livestock & Dairy Development

Livestock has long been a cornerstone of livelihood, culture, and household nutrition in the Nuba Mountains. Cattle, goats, and poultry provide milk, meat, eggs, income, and social security for rural families. However, years of conflict, displacement, climate variability, and limited public investment have significantly weakened the livestock sector. Many families lost animals during instability, while others continue to struggle with low productivity due to poor breeding practices, inadequate veterinary services, and limited access to feed and water resources.

As a result, milk production remains low, livestock mortality rates are high, and poultry yields are inconsistent. Preventable animal diseases often spread due to the absence of structured veterinary services, vaccination programs, and extension support. Farmers are forced to sell animals at low prices during emergencies due to lack of storage, processing, and organized market systems. Additionally, the dairy value chain remains underdeveloped, limiting opportunities for milk collection, preservation, processing, and marketing.

Women and youth—who are heavily involved in small livestock management and dairy activities—face limited access to training, cooperative structures, and market linkages. Without coordinated livestock and dairy development initiatives, rural households remain economically vulnerable and unable to maximize the full potential of livestock-based enterprises.

Purpose of the Project

The Livestock & Dairy Development project aims to revitalize and commercialize livestock production by supporting cattle, goat, and poultry programs; strengthening veterinary access; and developing structured dairy value chains. The project seeks to improve household income, enhance nutrition, and promote sustainable rural economic growth.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Identification and mobilization of livestock-keeping households

•Distribution of improved cattle, goat, and poultry breeds

•Training in modern animal husbandry and feed management

•Establishment of community-based veterinary services and vaccination programs

•Provision of veterinary kits and mobile animal health support

•Development of dairy collection centers and milk storage systems

•Introduction of basic milk processing and value-add techniques

•Formation of livestock and dairy cooperatives

•Market linkage development and value chain coordination

•Ongoing monitoring of productivity and animal health indicators

Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact

Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:

•Increased milk, meat, and egg production

•Improved household nutrition through access to animal protein

•Reduced livestock mortality and improved herd health

•Higher and more stable household income

•Strengthened dairy value chain systems

•Creation of employment opportunities in livestock and dairy enterprises

•Increased participation of women and youth in income-generating activities

•Enhanced resilience against climate and economic shocks

Ultimately, the Livestock & Dairy Development project will transform traditional livestock practices into organized, productive, and market-oriented enterprises—strengthening food security, economic stability, and long-term prosperity in the Nuba Mountains.
