Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for the majority of households in the Nuba Mountains. However, years of conflict, displacement, limited infrastructure, and climate variability have significantly weakened local agricultural systems. Many farming families lost seeds, tools, livestock, and productive assets during periods of instability. In addition, unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and soil degradation have reduced crop yields and increased vulnerability to food shortages.
As a result, households struggle to produce enough food to meet their nutritional needs, leading to chronic food insecurity and unstable income. Smallholder farmers often rely on traditional farming practices without access to improved seed varieties, modern tools, or climate-resilient techniques. Post-harvest losses and lack of cooperative structures further limit productivity and market access. Women and youth farmers, in particular, face limited access to agricultural inputs, training, and collective economic platforms.
Without targeted intervention, agricultural stagnation continues to undermine economic recovery, increase dependency on humanitarian assistance, and restrict long-term development in the Nuba Mountains.
Purpose of the Project
The Agriculture-Based Livelihoods project aims to strengthen sustainable agricultural production by supporting seed and tool distribution, promoting climate-smart farming practices, and establishing cooperative farming models. The initiative seeks to improve food security, increase household income, and enhance community resilience.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
•Identification and registration of vulnerable farming households
•Distribution of quality seeds and essential farming tools
•Training in climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land management
•Introduction of drought-resistant crop varieties
•Formation and strengthening of cooperative farming groups
•Establishment of shared storage and post-harvest management systems
•Development of collective marketing and supply chain linkages
•Ongoing technical support and monitoring
•Capacity building in cooperative governance and financial management
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Increased agricultural productivity and crop yields
•Improved household food security and nutrition
•Adoption of climate-resilient farming techniques
•Reduced post-harvest losses
•Enhanced income through cooperative marketing
•Greater participation of women and youth in agricultural leadership
•Reduced dependency on external food aid
•Strengthened community resilience and economic stability
Ultimately, the Agriculture-Based Livelihoods project will revitalize local farming systems, transforming agriculture into a sustainable foundation for economic recovery and long-term development in the Nuba Mountains.
