Refugee Self-Reliance Projects

In many diaspora and refugee-hosting countries, displaced families continue to experience prolonged dependency on humanitarian assistance due to limited livelihood opportunities, restricted access to land, and constrained economic participation. Years of displacement have eroded traditional income-generating systems, leaving many households without sustainable means of supporting themselves.

As a result, food insecurity, underemployment, and financial instability remain widespread among refugee populations. Families often rely on inconsistent aid distributions that are insufficient to meet basic nutritional and household needs. Youth and women, in particular, face barriers to employment and income generation due to limited access to productive resources, skills development opportunities, and market systems. Without structured livelihood support, refugees remain economically vulnerable and socially marginalized.

Despite these challenges, many displaced individuals retain valuable agricultural knowledge, livestock management experience, and trade skills that can be revitalized through targeted interventions. However, without starter inputs, technical support, and organized trade facilitation systems, these capabilities remain underutilized.

Purpose of the Project

The Refugee Self-Reliance Projects aim to reduce dependency on humanitarian aid by strengthening sustainable livelihood opportunities through kitchen gardens, small livestock rearing, and local trade facilitation. The project seeks to empower refugees to produce food, generate income, and actively participate in local economic systems.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Identification and registration of vulnerable refugee households

•Provision of seeds, tools, and training for kitchen garden establishment

•Distribution of small livestock (e.g., poultry, goats) with husbandry training

•Veterinary and technical support for livestock care

•Training in basic business and financial literacy

•Facilitation of local market access and trade networks

•Formation of cooperative savings and production groups

•Ongoing monitoring and technical mentorship

Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact

Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:

•Improved household food security through home-based food production

•Increased access to protein and diversified nutrition

•Enhanced household income from livestock and trade activities

•Reduced reliance on humanitarian assistance

•Strengthened financial independence and dignity

•Greater economic participation of women and youth

•Improved resilience against food and income shocks

•Increased community stability and social cohesion

Ultimately, the Refugee Self-Reliance Projects will transform displaced families from aid-dependent households into economically active and self-sustaining contributors within their host communities.
