Vocational & Technical Training

In many diaspora and refugee-hosting countries, displaced individuals—especially youth and women—face persistent unemployment and economic marginalization due to limited access to formal education, disrupted schooling, and restricted labor market opportunities. Many beneficiaries were forced to flee conflict before completing their education or acquiring marketable technical skills. As a result, they lack the professional qualifications and certifications required to compete in host-country job markets.

Consequently, families rely heavily on irregular informal labor, humanitarian assistance, or low-paying jobs that fail to meet basic household needs. Youth are particularly vulnerable to prolonged unemployment, which can lead to frustration, loss of confidence, and increased exposure to negative coping mechanisms. Women, especially female-headed households, face additional barriers to income generation due to limited mobility and access to structured skills training programs.

Despite the growing demand in many host countries for skilled trades such as carpentry, tailoring, mechanics, welding, construction, and solar installation, displaced populations often lack access to practical training facilities, technical tools, and certification pathways. Without targeted intervention, this skills gap continues to perpetuate poverty, dependency, and social vulnerability.

Purpose of the Project

The Vocational & Technical Training project aims to equip displaced individuals with practical, market-driven technical skills that enhance employability and enable self-employment. By focusing on high-demand trades such as carpentry, tailoring, mechanics, welding, construction, and solar installation, the project seeks to promote economic self-reliance and long-term livelihood sustainability.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Labor market assessments to identify high-demand technical skills

•Enrollment and selection of vulnerable youth and women

•Delivery of hands-on vocational training in selected trades

•Provision of certification or competency recognition

•Distribution of starter tool kits and essential equipment

•Business management and financial literacy training

•Apprenticeship and mentorship placements

•Support for cooperative trade groups where applicable

•Ongoing monitoring of employment and income outcomes

Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact

Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:

•Acquisition of practical, income-generating technical skills

•Increased employment and self-employment opportunities

•Immediate income generation through applied skills

•Reduced dependency on humanitarian assistance

•Improved household income and economic stability

•Enhanced confidence and professional identity

•Strengthened participation of women and youth in economic activities

•Increased community resilience and local service capacity

Ultimately, the Vocational & Technical Training project will transform displaced individuals from aid recipients into skilled professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to their host communities while supporting their families sustainably.
