Communities across the Nuba Mountains continue to face critical shortages of safe drinking water and adequate sanitation infrastructure due to prolonged conflict, environmental degradation, and limited public investment. Many rural villages rely on unsafe water sources such as seasonal streams, unprotected wells, and stagnant surface water. During dry seasons, families—particularly women and children—travel long distances to collect water, often from contaminated sources.
As a result, beneficiaries frequently experience:
•High prevalence of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and typhoid
•Increased child morbidity and preventable deaths
•Time lost from school due to illness or water collection responsibilities
•Poor hygiene conditions contributing to disease transmission
•Limited access to safe and private sanitation facilities
•Environmental contamination from improper waste disposal
Unsafe water consumption and inadequate sanitation practices continue to undermine public health outcomes. Children are particularly vulnerable to dehydration and infections, while women and girls face increased safety risks when traveling long distances for water or using open sanitation areas. Health facilities and schools often operate without reliable access to clean water, further compounding health risks.
Without structured interventions to improve water access and sanitation systems, preventable diseases will continue to compromise community well-being and resilience.
Purpose of the Project
The Safe Water & Sanitation Projects aim to improve public health and environmental conditions by expanding access to clean water sources and promoting sustainable sanitation practices across rural communities in the Nuba Mountains.
The project seeks to reduce waterborne diseases, enhance hygiene awareness, and strengthen community-led water management systems.
Key Project Activities
To achieve its objectives, the project will implement the following activities:
•Borehole drilling and rehabilitation of existing water points
•Installation of water purification systems and safe storage solutions
•Construction or improvement of community sanitation facilities
•Hygiene education campaigns (handwashing, safe water handling, waste management)
•Formation of community water and sanitation management committees
•Training for local technicians on maintenance of boreholes and purification systems
•Monitoring water quality and sanitation usage
•Collaboration with local leaders and schools to promote behavior change
These activities will provide both immediate access to safe water and long-term sustainability mechanisms.
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Increased access to safe and reliable drinking water
•Reduced incidence of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases
•Improved hygiene practices within households and schools
•Enhanced dignity and safety for women and girls
•Improved school attendance and productivity
•Strengthened community ownership and sustainability of water systems
Ultimately, the Safe Water & Sanitation Projects will improve health outcomes, protect vulnerable populations, and promote environmental sustainability in the Nuba Mountains. By combining infrastructure development with community education and management systems, the project will foster long-term resilience and healthier living conditions for rural communities.
