In many diaspora settings—particularly within refugee camps and displaced communities in host countries—families face prolonged economic hardship due to limited employment opportunities, restricted access to land, and dependence on insufficient humanitarian aid. Food rations often lack adequate protein sources, while rising food prices and economic instability further strain already vulnerable households.
As a result, families struggle to secure stable income and nutritious diets. Women-headed households, widows, and youth are especially affected, often relying solely on food distributions that fail to meet nutritional requirements. Children experience protein deficiencies that impact growth and immune health, while adults face reduced productivity due to inadequate nutrition. Without access to income-generating activities, families may resort to negative coping strategies such as selling household assets, withdrawing children from school, or taking on unsustainable debt.
The absence of sustainable livelihood options perpetuates dependency and undermines dignity, resilience, and long-term self-reliance within displaced communities.
Purpose of the Project
The Poultry & Livestock Micro-Projects initiative aims to address both economic vulnerability and nutritional deficiencies by supporting small-scale poultry farming and livestock distribution programs (such as goats and sheep). This project is designed to create a dual benefit of income generation and improved household nutrition, fostering sustainable self-reliance among vulnerable families.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
Identification and selection of vulnerable households (with focus on women and youth)
Distribution of poultry starter kits (chicks, feed, vaccination support, housing materials)
Distribution of goats/sheep to selected families
Training on animal husbandry, veterinary care, and small-scale livestock management
Provision of initial veterinary services and follow-up support
Establishment of community livestock management committees
Development of “pass-on” models (beneficiaries pass offspring to other families)
Basic business and financial literacy training
Monitoring animal health, productivity, and income impact
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
Increased household income from the sale of eggs, poultry, milk, or livestock
Improved access to protein-rich food sources
Enhanced child nutrition and health outcomes
Reduced dependency on humanitarian aid
Increased economic empowerment for women and youth
Strengthened household resilience against economic shocks
Community-wide multiplication of benefits through livestock pass-on systems
Greater dignity and self-reliance among displaced families
Ultimately, the Poultry & Livestock Micro-Projects will provide a sustainable pathway toward food security, income stability, and long-term resilience for vulnerable diaspora communities.
