Many families within our community in the United States—particularly refugees, low-income households, elderly individuals, and youth—face significant challenges related to nutrition, healthy eating habits, and preventive healthcare awareness. Upon resettlement, many beneficiaries encounter unfamiliar food systems, processed and fast-food environments, limited nutrition education, and economic constraints that influence unhealthy dietary choices.
As a result, community members experience increased rates of diet-related illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. In addition, language barriers, limited access to culturally appropriate nutrition information, and lack of cooking skills adapted to locally available ingredients further exacerbate health risks. Youth are particularly vulnerable to unhealthy food marketing and sedentary lifestyles, while older adults struggle to manage chronic conditions due to insufficient preventive health knowledge.
These challenges not only affect individual health but also place economic strain on families due to rising medical expenses and lost productivity. Without structured intervention, long-term health disparities within the community are likely to increase.
Purpose of the Project
The Nutrition & Healthy Living Workshops Project is designed to address these challenges by providing culturally sensitive education, practical cooking skills, and preventive health awareness to empower families to make informed lifestyle choices. The project aims to promote healthier behaviors, reduce preventable diseases, and improve overall well-being within the community.
