Nutrition Recovery for Vulnerable Groups

Communities in the Nuba Mountains continue to experience high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition due to prolonged conflict, limited healthcare infrastructure, climate shocks, and economic instability. Pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five are among the most vulnerable groups, facing heightened risks of malnutrition, anemia, low birth weight, and preventable illnesses.

Many families lack access to diversified diets rich in protein, vitamins, and essential micronutrients. Seasonal food shortages, disrupted agricultural systems, and poverty further restrict nutritional intake. As a result, children under five frequently suffer from acute malnutrition, stunting, wasting, weakened immunity, and delayed cognitive development. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are particularly at risk of complications due to iron deficiency, inadequate caloric intake, and limited prenatal nutritional support.

The absence of structured nutrition recovery services and limited emergency feeding facilities exacerbates these challenges. Rural health centers are often under-resourced and unable to provide consistent nutritional screening or treatment. Without targeted intervention, malnutrition continues to threaten child survival rates, maternal health outcomes, and long-term human development in the region.

Purpose of the Project


The Nutrition Recovery for Vulnerable Groups project aims to reduce acute malnutrition and strengthen maternal and child health by providing targeted nutritional support to pregnant women and children under five, as well as establishing emergency feeding centers in high-risk communities. The project seeks to stabilize vulnerable households, improve survival outcomes, and build a foundation for healthier future generations.

Key Project Activities


The project will implement the following activities:

Identification and screening of malnourished children and at-risk pregnant women

Establishment of emergency feeding centers in targeted rural communities

Distribution of therapeutic and supplementary nutrition packages

Provision of fortified foods and micronutrient supplements

Regular growth monitoring and health assessments

Nutrition education for caregivers and mothers

Training of community health workers in nutrition recovery protocols

Referral systems for severe acute malnutrition cases

Community awareness campaigns on maternal and child nutrition
