Women Economic Empowerment Centers

Women in the Nuba Mountains continue to face significant economic and social challenges due to prolonged conflict, limited access to education, restricted financial services, and underdeveloped economic infrastructure. Many women, particularly widows, female-headed households, and displaced individuals, have assumed primary responsibility for supporting their families in the absence of stable income sources.

Despite possessing valuable traditional skills in agriculture, handicrafts, food processing, tailoring, and trade, women often lack access to structured training centers, startup capital, and market networks. Financial institutions are scarce in rural areas, and women frequently face barriers in accessing credit due to lack of collateral, formal identification, or financial literacy. Without structured support systems, many women remain confined to low-income informal activities that fail to meet household needs.

This economic marginalization not only limits women’s independence and leadership but also directly affects children’s nutrition, education, and overall family well-being. The absence of organized economic empowerment initiatives perpetuates poverty cycles and restricts the region’s broader economic recovery and development.

Purpose of the Project

The Women’s Economic Empowerment Centers project aims to establish community-based centers that provide vocational skills training, access to micro-finance, and small business incubation support. The initiative seeks to strengthen women’s economic participation, promote financial inclusion, and foster sustainable enterprise development.

•Delivery of vocational skills training programs (e.g., tailoring, food processing, agribusiness, crafts)

•Financial literacy and business management workshops

•Creation of micro-finance and savings group mechanisms

•Provision of small startup grants or revolving loan systems

•Business incubation support and mentorship
