Livestock-Based Enterprise

Livestock has traditionally played a central role in the livelihoods, culture, and economic stability of communities in the Nuba Mountains. However, years of conflict, displacement, climate variability, livestock diseases, and limited veterinary infrastructure have significantly weakened the livestock sector. Many families lost animals during periods of instability, while others continue to struggle with low productivity due to inadequate feed, poor breeding practices, and lack of veterinary support.

As a result, households that once relied on dairy, poultry, and small ruminants for both nutrition and income now face reduced milk production, high mortality rates among animals, and limited market access. The absence of organized dairy cooperatives and poultry farming systems prevents farmers from achieving economies of scale or negotiating better market prices. In addition, limited access to trained veterinary service providers contributes to preventable livestock losses, further reducing income potential.

Women and youth, who are often heavily involved in small livestock management, lack structured enterprise opportunities to transform livestock rearing into sustainable businesses. Without organized livestock-based enterprises, rural communities remain economically vulnerable and dependent on low-yield subsistence farming.

Purpose of the Project

The Livestock-Based Enterprises project aims to revitalize and commercialize the livestock sector in the Nuba Mountains by supporting dairy cooperatives, establishing poultry farms, and promoting veterinary service entrepreneurship. The project seeks to increase household income, improve nutrition, and strengthen rural economic resilience through livestock value chain development.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Identification and organization of livestock farmers into cooperatives

•Establishment of dairy collection and processing centers

•Support for small- and medium-scale poultry farm development

•Distribution of improved livestock breeds and starter stock

•Training in modern animal husbandry and feed management

•Capacity building for veterinary service entrepreneurs

•Provision of veterinary kits and mobile animal health services

•Development of market linkages for dairy and poultry products

•Monitoring of livestock health and productivity

Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact

Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:

•Increased milk, egg, and meat production

•Improved household nutrition through access to animal protein

•Higher and more stable household income

•Reduced livestock mortality through improved veterinary services

•Creation of employment opportunities in livestock value chains

•Strengthened cooperative systems and collective marketing

•Enhanced participation of women and youth in income-generating activities

•Improved resilience against climate and economic shocks

Ultimately, the Livestock-Based Enterprises project will transform traditional livestock practices into organized, profitable enterprises that promote food security, economic growth, and sustainable development in the Nuba Mountains.
