Agriculture remains the primary livelihood for the majority of families in the Nuba Mountains. However, years of conflict, displacement, limited infrastructure, fragmented markets, and climate variability have weakened individual farming systems. Most smallholder farmers cultivate small plots of land independently, with minimal access to improved inputs, storage facilities, transportation, or organized market channels.
As a result, farmers face low productivity, post-harvest losses, price exploitation by middlemen, and limited bargaining power. Without proper storage facilities, harvested crops are often damaged by pests, moisture, or spoilage, leading to significant income loss. In addition, isolated farming practices limit access to shared knowledge, modern techniques, and economies of scale. Women and youth farmers are particularly disadvantaged due to limited capital, reduced land access, and weak market connections.
This fragmentation of agricultural efforts contributes to chronic food insecurity, unstable household income, and underdeveloped local economies. Without collective organization and structured support systems, farmers remain vulnerable to market shocks, climate impacts, and economic instability.
Purpose of the Project
The Cooperative Farming Clusters project aims to strengthen agricultural productivity, improve market access, and increase farmer incomes by organizing community farming groups into structured cooperative clusters. By promoting shared storage facilities, collective marketing systems, and coordinated production planning, the project seeks to enhance efficiency, resilience, and economic sustainability.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
Mobilization and formation of community farming cooperatives
Training in cooperative governance and financial management
Establishment of shared storage facilities and post-harvest management systems
Introduction of collective input procurement systems
Development of coordinated crop production plans
Market linkage development and buyer negotiations
Provision of shared tools and agricultural equipment
Capacity building in value addition and packaging
Monitoring and evaluation of productivity and income growth
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
Increased agricultural productivity through coordinated efforts
Reduced post-harvest losses due to improved storage systems
Improved bargaining power and better market prices
Higher and more stable household incomes
Strengthened community cooperation and unity
Greater inclusion of women and youth in agricultural leadership
Increased food security and economic resilience
Development of sustainable, community-owned agricultural systems
Ultimately, the Cooperative Farming Clusters project will transform fragmented smallholder farming into organized, market-oriented agricultural systems that promote dignity, stability, and long-term prosperity in the Nuba Mountains.
