Communities in the Nuba Mountains continue to face severe challenges related to limited access to clean water and sustainable irrigation systems. Prolonged conflict, underdeveloped infrastructure, and recurring climate shocks have weakened traditional water sources such as seasonal streams and shallow wells. Irregular rainfall patterns and extended dry seasons have further reduced water availability, directly impacting both household consumption and agricultural productivity.
As a result, families—particularly women and children—are often forced to travel long distances to fetch water from unsafe or unreliable sources. This exposes them to health risks, reduces time available for education and economic activities, and increases vulnerability to waterborne diseases. In many villages, farmers rely solely on rain-fed agriculture, making crop production unpredictable and insufficient during drought periods. The lack of irrigation infrastructure limits year-round farming, reduces yields, and contributes to chronic food insecurity.
Without access to reliable water systems, communities remain trapped in cycles of poverty, poor health outcomes, and agricultural instability. The absence of structured water management systems also heightens tensions over scarce resources, further affecting social cohesion and resilience.
Purpose of the Project
The Irrigation & Water Access Projects aim to improve access to safe and sustainable water sources for household use and agricultural production. Through borehole drilling, water harvesting systems, and small-scale irrigation schemes, the project seeks to strengthen food security, improve public health, and enhance climate resilience in the Nuba Mountains.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
Hydrogeological assessments to identify viable water sources
Drilling and installation of boreholes with hand pumps or solar-powered systems
Construction of rainwater harvesting and storage systems
Development of small-scale irrigation schemes for farming communities
Training community water management committees
Hygiene and sanitation awareness campaigns
Establishment of maintenance and sustainability plans
Monitoring water quality and system performance
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
Increased access to clean and safe drinking water
Reduced incidence of waterborne diseases
Decreased time spent collecting water, especially for women and children
Improved school attendance and productivity
Enhanced agricultural productivity through irrigation
Year-round farming opportunities and increased household income
Strengthened community resilience to drought and climate variability
Reduced resource-based conflicts
Ultimately, the Irrigation & Water Access Projects will provide life-sustaining infrastructure that improves health, restores agricultural stability, and promotes long-term community development in the Nuba Mountains.
