In many refugee settlements and diaspora communities across host countries, displaced children face persistent food insecurity and malnutrition due to limited household income, inadequate humanitarian rations, and restricted access to diversified diets. Families struggling to meet basic needs are often unable to provide consistent, nutritious meals for their children, especially during prolonged displacement and economic hardship.
As a result, many school-age children attend classes hungry or with insufficient nutritional intake. Hunger significantly affects their concentration, memory retention, classroom participation, and overall academic performance. Chronic undernutrition can lead to stunted growth, weakened immune systems, increased absenteeism, and higher dropout rates. In some cases, families withdraw children from school to reduce household expenses or to involve them in income-generating activities, further compromising their long-term educational and economic prospects.
Girls are particularly vulnerable, as food insecurity often contributes to early marriage, school discontinuation, and health risks linked to poor nutrition. Without targeted intervention, the cycle of hunger and interrupted education continues to undermine the potential of an entire generation.
Purpose of the Project
The School Feeding Support Initiative aims to address child hunger and improve educational outcomes by providing nutritious meal supplementation within schools and establishing community-supported kitchen programs. The project seeks to enhance learning capacity, increase school attendance, and improve overall health and well-being among displaced children.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
Identification of schools and vulnerable student populations
Provision of daily or weekly nutritious meal supplementation
Establishment of community-supported school kitchens
Procurement and distribution of locally sourced food supplies
Engagement of parents and community volunteers in meal preparation
Nutrition education for students and caregivers
Monitoring student attendance and health indicators
Coordination with local education and health authorities
Development of sustainable food sourcing and kitchen management systems
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
Improved nutritional status among school-age children
Increased school attendance and reduced dropout rates
Enhanced concentration, academic performance, and participation
Improved physical health and reduced vulnerability to illness
Greater parental engagement in education
Strengthened community ownership of school support systems
Increased gender equity in school retention
Ultimately, the School Feeding Support Initiative will not only combat hunger but also protect children’s right to education, promote dignity, and foster long-term resilience within refugee and diaspora communities.
