Diaspora and refugee communities often carry the legacy of past conflicts, political divisions, ethnic tensions, and trauma from their countries of origin. Even after resettlement, unresolved grievances and historical narratives can resurface within community spaces, leading to mistrust, fragmentation, and internal divisions. Differences in political perspectives, tribal affiliations, generational experiences, and adaptation to host-country systems can further intensify tensions.
As a result, disputes within diaspora communities may escalate due to limited conflict resolution mechanisms and lack of trained mediators. Minor misunderstandings can quickly grow into long-term divisions that weaken social cohesion, disrupt collective initiatives, and hinder community development. Youth may inherit unresolved tensions from previous generations, while women and marginalized groups may feel excluded from reconciliation processes.
Without structured peacebuilding education and leadership training, communities lack the tools to facilitate constructive dialogue, address disputes peacefully, and rebuild trust. The absence of trained facilitators and mediation skills increases the risk of persistent division, social isolation, and reduced collective advocacy strength.
