Many diaspora and refugee communities residing in remote or underserved host-country locations face chronic water insecurity. In isolated settlements and camps, access to safe and reliable water sources is often limited, irregular, or entirely absent. Families may rely on unsafe surface water, contaminated wells, or distant water points that require long travel times.
As a result, beneficiaries frequently experience:
•Water shortages during dry seasons
•Consumption of unsafe water leading to waterborne diseases
•Long distances traveled by women and children to collect water
•High costs of purchasing clean water from private vendors
•Limited water availability for hygiene, sanitation, and small-scale agriculture
•Increased vulnerability during climate-related droughts or flooding
The absence of structured water resource management systems leaves communities exposed to health risks, environmental degradation, and recurring humanitarian crises. Over-reliance on a single water source without proper conservation, purification, or sustainable storage mechanisms leads to depletion and contamination.
Without investment in sustainable water management strategies, communities remain trapped in cycles of scarcity, disease, and environmental stress.
Purpose of the Project
The Water Resource Management Projects initiative aims to strengthen sustainable water access through rainwater harvesting systems, water purification technologies, and the development or reservation of new water sources in isolated areas.
The project seeks to improve community resilience, health outcomes, and environmental sustainability through integrated water resource planning and infrastructure development.
Key Project Activities
To achieve its objectives, the project will implement the following activities:
•Community water needs assessments and hydrological feasibility studies
•Construction of rainwater harvesting systems (rooftop and community-level)
•Installation of water purification and filtration systems
•Rehabilitation or drilling of new water sources where feasible
•Development of water storage reservoirs in isolated areas
•Formation of community water management committees
•Training on maintenance, conservation practices, and hygiene awareness
•Monitoring water quality and usage sustainability
These activities will combine infrastructure development with community ownership and capacity building to ensure long-term functionality.
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Increased access to safe and reliable water sources
•Reduced incidence of waterborne diseases
•Shorter travel distances and time savings for water collection
•Improved hygiene and sanitation practices
•Enhanced food security through small-scale irrigation support
•Greater resilience to climate variability and drought
•Strengthened community-led water governance systems
Ultimately, the Water Resource Management Projects will promote sustainable water security within diaspora communities. By integrating rainwater harvesting, purification systems, and the development of new water sources, the initiative will enhance health, protect the environment, and empower communities to manage their water resources responsibly and sustainably.
