Many diaspora and refugee communities living in host countries continue to face limited access to reliable and affordable electricity. In informal settlements, remote rural areas, or under-resourced refugee camps, households often depend on unsafe and expensive energy sources such as kerosene lamps, charcoal, diesel generators, or candles. These energy alternatives expose families to health hazards, fire risks, environmental degradation, and recurring financial burdens.

Beneficiaries frequently experience:

•Limited lighting for students to study at night

•Reduced productivity for home-based businesses

•Inability to power communication devices and essential equipment

•Health risks from indoor air pollution

•High energy costs relative to household income

•Limited access to refrigeration for medicines and food preservation

The lack of reliable electricity restricts economic development, educational attainment, and healthcare access. Women and children are disproportionately affected, as they often bear the burden of energy-related domestic tasks and face increased safety risks in poorly lit environments.

Purpose of the Project

The Renewable Energy Access Projects initiative aims to improve energy access by supporting solar lighting distribution and establishing community solar mini-grids in underserved diaspora settings.
