Across many underserved and immigrant communities in the United States, youth face significant barriers when transitioning from school to meaningful employment. While many young people complete high school or begin college, they often lack practical exposure to professional environments, structured career guidance, and mentorship networks that prepare them for competitive labor markets. Many youth experience:
•Limited understanding of diverse career pathways beyond a narrow set of familiar occupations
•Lack of interview preparation and professional communication skills
•Minimal exposure to internship opportunities and workplace expectations
•Weak professional networking connections
•Low confidence navigating job search systems and recruitment processes
As a result, youth may apply for jobs without adequate preparation, face repeated rejection, and become discouraged. Some settle for low-wage employment unrelated to their interests or potential, while others delay career progression due to uncertainty and lack of guidance. The absence of structured mentorship and internship readiness programs disproportionately affects first-generation students and youth from marginalized backgrounds.
Without targeted career readiness interventions, many capable young individuals risk underemployment, limited career diversification, and missed opportunities for long-term economic mobility.
