Environmental Peacebuilding Projects

Communities in the Nuba Mountains depend heavily on land, water, forests, and grazing areas for their livelihoods. Agriculture, livestock herding, and small-scale natural resource use form the backbone of local economies. However, years of armed conflict, displacement, environmental degradation, and climate variability have significantly reduced access to productive land and reliable water sources. As natural resources become scarcer, competition among farmers, pastoralists, and neighboring communities has intensified.

As a result, disputes over land boundaries, grazing corridors, and water access have become more frequent. Seasonal migration of livestock in search of pasture and water often leads to crop destruction, retaliatory violence, and breakdown of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms. These tensions weaken social cohesion, disrupt economic activities, and undermine recovery efforts in post-conflict settings. In many areas, customary land governance systems have been disrupted by displacement and institutional fragility. The absence of structured and inclusive resource management frameworks has created uncertainty, mistrust, and recurring cycles of conflict. Women and youth, who depend on natural resources for survival, are often excluded from decision-making processes, further deepening grievances and vulnerability.

Without integrated environmental peacebuilding initiatives that link natural resource management with conflict resolution, resource-based tensions will continue to threaten stability, food security, and long-term development in the Nuba Mountains.

Purpose of the Project
The Environmental Peacebuilding Projects aim to reduce conflict and strengthen social cohesion by promoting shared natural resource governance, inclusive conflict resolution mechanisms, and sustainable land and water management systems. The project seeks to transform competition over resources into cooperation for sustainable development.

Key Project Activities

The project will implement the following activities:

•Hydrogeological assessments to identify viable borehole sites

•Borehole drilling and installation of hand pumps or solar-powered systems

•Installation of water purification and filtration systems

•Construction of water storage and distribution points

•Formation and training of community water management committees

•Hygiene and sanitation awareness campaigns

•Development of maintenance and sustainability plans

•Monitoring water quality and usage indicators

Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact

Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:

•Increased access to safe and reliable drinking water

•Reduced incidence of waterborne diseases

•Improved hygiene standards in households, schools, and clinics

•Reduced time spent collecting water, especially for women and children

•Increased productivity and school attendance

•Strengthened community resilience during dry seasons

•Improved agricultural and livestock water access

•Enhanced long-term environmental and social sustainability

Ultimately, the Water Access & Borehole Development project will transform water scarcity into water security—protecting health, restoring dignity, and creating a foundation for sustainable development in the Nuba Mountains.
