Communities across the Nuba Mountains face persistent challenges in accessing safe and reliable water sources. Years of conflict, environmental degradation, damaged infrastructure, and limited public investment have left many villages dependent on seasonal streams, shallow wells, and unprotected water points. During dry seasons, water sources shrink or completely disappear, forcing families to travel long distances in search of water.
As a result, women and children often spend several hours daily collecting water, reducing time available for education, farming, and income-generating activities. In many cases, communities rely on contaminated water sources shared with livestock, leading to outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and other preventable illnesses. Poor water quality affects overall public health, productivity, and household stability.
The absence of boreholes and water purification systems limits community resilience against drought and climate variability. Health centers and schools frequently operate without reliable water access, compromising hygiene standards and service delivery. Without sustainable water infrastructure, communities remain vulnerable to disease, food insecurity, and economic hardship.
Purpose of the Project
The Water Access & Borehole Development project aims to improve access to safe, clean, and sustainable water sources by supporting borehole drilling and installing water purification systems. The initiative seeks to enhance public health, reduce the burden on women and children, and strengthen climate resilience.
Key Project Activities
The project will implement the following activities:
•Hydrogeological assessments to identify viable borehole sites
•Borehole drilling and installation of hand pumps or solar-powered systems
•Installation of water purification and filtration systems
•Construction of water storage and distribution points
•Formation and training of community water management committees
•Hygiene and sanitation awareness campaigns
•Development of maintenance and sustainability plans
•Monitoring water quality and usage indicators
Project Outcomes & Beneficiary Impact
Through this initiative, beneficiaries will experience:
•Increased access to safe and reliable drinking water
•Reduced incidence of waterborne diseases
•Improved hygiene standards in households, schools, and clinics
•Reduced time spent collecting water, especially for women and children
•Increased productivity and school attendance
•Strengthened community resilience during dry seasons
•Improved agricultural and livestock water access
•Enhanced long-term environmental and social sustainability
Ultimately, the Water Access & Borehole Development project will transform water scarcity into water security—protecting health, restoring dignity, and creating a foundation for sustainable development in the Nuba Mountains.
“Access to clean water is not just survival—it is dignity, health, and opportunity.”
